Unions welcome minimum wage hike

PETALING JAYA: Unions applaud the increase in the minimum wage announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of Budget 2025.

In two separate statements on Thursday (Oct 24), the Railwaymens Union of Malaya (RUM) and the Union of Postal Clerical Workers (UPCW) said that increasing the minimum wage from RM1,500 to RM1,700 would improve the quality of life for workers, especially those in the B40 category.

“As representatives of Pos Malaysia’s clerical workers, UPCW is currently in the process of advocating a salary increase that is higher than the announced minimum rate,” said UPCW secretary-general Muhammad Nizam Hadzir.

At the same time, the RUM president, Muhammad Faizal Shahibul Kiraya, said the union welcomed the Human Resources Ministry's suggestion to publish the Minimum Wage Guidelines for all employment sectors.

“At the same time, the government’s efforts to implement the Progressive Wage Policy would reform the labour market, increase workers’ income, and in turn, create a positive effect on productivity,” he said.
