Over 20 homes damaged by another storm in Kemaman

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Kemaman district was hit by another storm this afternoon, causing damage to over 20 homes in Chukai and Kijal.

Terengganu Disaster Management Committee deputy chairman Hanafiah Mat said the incident, which occurred around 4 pm, also tore off the roof of a building at Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara (KKTM) Kemaman in Chukai.

"However, no residents were moved to temporary shelters as the damage was not as severe as what was experienced during Wednesday’s (Oct 23) hailstorm and strong winds.

"Most homes sustained minor damages and lost only about seven or eight roofing tiles,” said the State Infrastructure, Utilities and Rural Development Committee chairman and Chukai assemblyman when contacted by Bernama.

Meanwhile, Chukai Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohd Zailani Abdullah said no injuries were reported in the one- to two-minute storm.

"In the same incident, the fire department received calls about two fallen trees in the Chukai area, and cleanup efforts are underway,” he said.

On Wednesday, Chukai and surrounding areas within a three-kilometer radius were hit by a hailstorm accompanied by strong winds.

The incident, which occurred at 4 pm and lasted 10 to 15 minutes, caused extensive damages to 244 homes and seven schools, particularly to the roofs. - Bernama
