JOHOR BARU: Enticed by the promise of instant and high returns, a maintenance supervisor fell for an online scam, losing almost RM150,000.
Seri Alam OCPD Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the 64-year-old thought he would receive a 15% return on his investment.
“He was convinced by a suspect who promised him instant profits. The victim... (then) agreed to invest in the online scheme, called Q-She.
“He made a total of 10 online banking transactions to six different bank accounts amounting to RM149,291 from Aug 27 to Oct 14.
“When the victim tried to claim his profits on Oct 15, the suspect gave him excuses and even urged him to invest more funds.
“It was then the victim realised that he had been duped,” Supt Mohd Sohaimi said in a statement.
He added that the victim lodged a police report on Wednesday.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
“Individuals who want to make an online transfer should use the Semakmule portal to verify and check the list of mule bank accounts, phone numbers and shell companies used by scammers,” he said.
