Wild elephants damage cars and leave 14 people shaken

IPOH: Drivers and passengers inside four cars were left terrified and shaken after an encounter with wild elephants that damaged their vehicles along KM11 of the East-West Highway near Gerik.

Perak deputy police chief Deputy Comm Zulkafli Sariaat said the 14 people in the cars were not injured in the incident on Wednesday at about 9.15pm.

He added that four police reports were lodged on the same day around 11pm.

He said all the cars were heading towards Gerik from Jeli in Kelantan, and when they arrived at the site, they saw a herd of elephants on the road.

“Because it was dark, the drivers were unsure how many elephants were there.

“Upon seeing the elephants, all drivers of the cars stopped their vehicles, and not long after that, some of the elephants started to leave, but a few of them headed towards the vehicles.

“The elephants then slammed and pushed the cars, and after some time, they left towards a forest nearby,” he said in a statement yesterday.

DCP Zulkafli said all the four cars were dented at the front, sides and the back.

He said the Perak Wildlife and National Parks Department had been informed about the incident for further action.
