PETALING JAYA: An aide to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim clarified that the prime minister only acknowledged Datuk Seri Najib Razak's apology over the 1MDB scandal.
Kamil Munim, Anwar’s political secretary in his role as the finance minister, addressed claims suggesting Anwar had accepted the apology.
"The issue of whether the prime minister accepted the apology does not arise," he stated.
Kamil highlighted that Anwar said the apology was "well-received" but this does not alter the fact that the country suffered significant damage from the 1MDB scandal.
He added that arguments defending the 1MDB incident have become invalid following Najib’s apology.
"No one is above the law. The justice process should and must be upheld," Kamil emphasised.
On Oct 24, Najib apologised to all Malaysians for the 1MDB scandal, which unfolded during his tenure as prime minister and finance minister.
Najib explained that he issued the apology, read by his son Datuk Mohd Nizar Najib, after reflecting during his 26 months in jail, amid recent developments regarding 1MDB.
When questioned about Najib’s apology, Anwar simply responded, "Terima baik (well-received)."
