KUCHING: The Batu Kawa area will be developed into a satellite township between Kuching and Bau, says Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.

He said Batu Kawa is one of the areas in and around the state capital identified for urban development.

"Bau is now in the process of development as a resort city. Batu Kawa is located in the middle between Bau and Kuching, which includes Matang.

"These are three areas where we are focusing on for urban development," he said during the opening of the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry multipurpose hall on Monday (Oct 28).

Abang Johari said development in Batu Kawa involves improving the drainage system to mitigate flash floods.

He added that there are also plans to build new roads for better traffic flow, and a new autonomous rapid transit (ART) line will be extended to Batu Kawa in the future.

"We want Batu Kawa to be developed in an orderly manner. When we have good infrastructure, the people will benefit," he said.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also the Batu Kawa assemblyman, said the new multipurpose hall is part of the transformation taking place in the area.

The hall, which can accommodate 1,000 people, overlooks a lake at a former quarry site in Batu Kawa.

"The quarry was abandoned for a long time, but now it has been rejuvenated for public use," Dr Sim said at the event.

He added that future development plans for the site include walking trails, rock climbing, and water sports facilities.
