Sabah corporation rolls out caravans for tourism

KOTA KINABALU: Fancy taking a caravan to see Sabah’s sights? A state government-linked corporation will have tourists covered soon with its new mobile home caravan initiative.

Sabah Credit Corporation (SCC) is introducing a caravan trailer model made in China that fits two adults and two children, equipped with solar charging, air conditioning, clean and waste water tanks and a bath area.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew who toured the caravan called the mobile home “a perfect choice for travel enthusiasts” which could boost rural tourism in the state.

"It is a novelty, something new for the state in providing unique experiences for domestic and international tourists alike,” she said after launching the Big Sabah Sale event at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here on Monday (Oct 28).

The Goway caravan, the centre of attraction at the event, measures 3800mm long and 2100mm wide with a height of 2400mm.

The caravan trailer will need to be hitched to another vehicle and requires a separate motor vehicle licence (road tax).

Briefing Liew on the caravan, SCC chief executive officer Datuk George Taitim Tulas said the corporation is bringing in the caravans with its tourism revenue-generating potential in mind.

“The tourism sector needs to be supported, expanded and capitalised on,” he said.

Taitim encouraged interested operators and individuals to venture into caravan rentals as a new option for tourists including renting out land on which caravans can be parked for outings.

“It provides entrepreneurs with an avenue to participate in the tourism industry,” he said, adding that graduates and school leavers may consider venturing into tourism entrepreneurship via the caravans.

In response to a question from the Minister, Taitim said the corporation will provide financing facilities, training and guidance for potential owners/operators, and service and maintenance for them.
