SEREMBAN: Police believe they have crippled the activities of a drug distribution syndicate following the seizure of 13.7kg of compressed dried leaves believed to be cannabis from a suspect, says state police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yussof.
He said a police team nabbed the 33-year-old man during an operation at the carpark of a hypermarket in Bahau at around 8pm on Oct 25.
"Upon checking his car, the police narcotics team found five packets containing compressed dried leaves believed to be ganja weighing some 5kg.
"In a follow-up raid at his home in Labis, Johor, the team found nine more compressed packets and another normal packet weighing some 8.7kg believed to be the same drug," he said in a statement.
DCP Ahmad Dzaffir said a urine test carried out on the suspect had however returned negative for substance abuse.
The suspect, he said, did not have any previous criminal record.
"Based on preliminary investigations, we believe the drug was to be supplied to addicts in Negri Sembilan and Johor," he said, adding that the seized drug could be used by some 2,600 users.
The suspect, he said, has been remanded for seven days.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the death sentence or life imprisonment and a minimum 12 strokes of the cane.
