A TOTAL of 40 students from the Nirtya Jothi Dance Academy performed a two-hour non-stop Barathanatyam show to raise funds for the Perak Hindu Sangam, Malaysia Nanban reported.

The performance of the Skantha Leelai (Murugan’s Play), depicting the tales of Lord Murugan playfully testing the faith of his devotees told in dance form, was held at the Kinta Indian Association Hall in Ipoh.

Academy founder and dance teacher Uma Manogaran, who received several awards for her performances and work in training young dancers, said the students took about a month to prepare and rehearse for this show.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s special officer for the Tambun constituency, R. Suresh Kumar, officiated the event and announced further financial aid for the Sangam.

Sangam chairman Chandrasekaran Perumal thanked all those who participated in the event and other fund-raising programmes.

The Sangam has bought its own building in Ipoh, he said.
