Husband and wife nabbed with syabu worth RM700,000

JOHOR BARU: Police have seized over RM700,000 worth of drugs and arrested three people, including a married couple, in Bandar Seri Alam here.

Seri Alam OCPD Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the arrests were made by the Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) at 9.30pm on Oct 18 after a week-long surveillance operation.

He added that the suspects were detained while waiting to allegedly deliver drugs to other members of the syndicate, who remain at large.

“We believe this group is part of a larger syndicate. Their role is to act as couriers, transporting drug supplies from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Baru.

“Their method involves collecting the drugs and waiting for other syndicate members to pick them up in this area,” he told a press conference at district police headquarters on Tuesday (Oct 29).

He added that the vehicle used to store and transport the drugs would be handed over to the syndicate members responsible for distribution.

Supt Sohaimi said police believe the group is led by a 58-year-old local man, his 45-year-old foreign wife and a 40-year-old man who was their driver.

“All three tested negative for drugs.

"Background checks found that the 58-year-old suspect has two previous offences, the driver has seven, and the woman has one, all related to drugs,” he added.

The group has reportedly been active since July.

Supt Sohaimi said police also seized 20 packets of syabu weighing about 22kg, with an estimated value of RM705,472.

“Each packet weighing around 1kg is worth more than RM30,000,” he said.

Police also confiscated the syndicate’s vehicle, valued at RM45,000.

The suspects are currently on remand until Thursday (Oct 31) to assist with the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking.
