Ipoh blast: Relevant agencies still probing loud noise from different perspectives, says Perak top cop

IPOH: Further studies on the mysterious loud noise that shook the city last week will be conducted from other perspectives by the relevant agencies to determine its cause, says Comm Datuk Azizi Mat Aris (pic).

The Perak police chief said the relevant agencies have already ruled out three scientific hypotheses and would continue to study the incident from other angles.

"There may be a need to delve deeper with new approaches, for us to detect unexpected elements or things that are off our radar.

"Maybe there are some internal movements in limestone hill (structures), so we will look into all this," he said in a press conference here on Tuesday (Oct 29)

He had said this after a meeting with about 20 agencies, including the Armed Forces, Meteorological Department, Minerals and Geoscience Department and District and Land Office.

"We've heard that such an incident occurs once every six years, since 2012, in 2018 and this year, so it is still a mystery.

"We will need to see if there are other scientific methods (to detect the cause for the noise)," he added.

A loud noise was reported to have been heard in several parts of the city on Oct 21, accompanied by a brief tremor that shook buildings.

Comm Azizi said they have already ruled out rock-blasting activities, earthquakes, army exercises and sonic boom caused by supersonic jets as causes for the noise.

He said the equipment used by the relevant agencies, including radars, did not pick up any movements that could cause the incident.

"The controlled explosives used (for rock blasting) in quarries cannot cause tremors that are felt in various areas.

"Even the theory on (sonic boom caused by) supersonic jets, we rejected it because our airspace is controlled and there were no flights then," he said, adding that there was also no movement beneath the earth's crust detected.
