THE Parliament building began incorporating solar energy into its operations on Oct 1, says Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.
“This means that we are among the first Parliament buildings to incorporate solar energy in the world. Thank you to the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry and Finance Ministry,” he said at the Dewan Rakyat during Ministers’ Question Time yesterday.
The Speaker told the House this after Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun (PH-Port Dickson) asked Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof to state his ministry’s plan for education and awareness programmes to enhance public understanding of the importance of energy transition.
He had also asked about measures to involve youth in efforts to empower energy transition and sustainability.
In November last year, Johari had announced plans to incorporate solar energy into Parliament building operations as part of its commitment to a more sustainable future.
He said this was in line with the government’s target of zero net emissions by 2050.
Earlier, Fadillah, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, outlined current measures to increase awareness on energy transition through the ministry’s Malaysia Energy Literacy Programme (MELP) in collaboration with government agencies, public universities and the private sector.
These include Powering the Future workshops, a collaboration between Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and Star Media Group (SMG) involving 60 schools.
“The workshops are held to increase awareness among youth on energy conservation and the transition to renewable energy.
“Other campaigns and promotional activities on energy sustainability (are being conducted) through social media and other communication channels, such as the ‘Pesan Mak!’ campaign.
“This campaign is a relaxed, awareness-based initiative designed to encourage energy-saving practices at home and in the workplace while supporting government efforts to reduce energy wastage and address climate change,” he told the august House.
