Fisherman charged with murder of Pakistani man in Penang


GEORGE TOWN: A fisherman has been charged in a Magistrate's Court here with the murder of a Pakistani man, Bernama reports.

However, no plea was recorded when the charges were read out to Kiong Chan Kyam, 38, before Magistrate Mohamad Azlan Basri on Wednesday (Oct 30) as murder cases are under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

The accused acknowledged that he understood the charges read against him.

According to the charge sheet, Kiong is accused of killing Rashid Mahmood at Jalan Burma at about 4pm on Oct 21.

The charge is framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty, or life imprisonment and caning, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Syairah Aqilah Khalil appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented.

The court set Jan 21 for next mention.

It was reported earlier that the 48-year-old victim was working in a shop when he was stabbed several times with a sharp weapon.

He was taken to a private clinic by a friend but died at around 6pm that day.

Police then arrested eight people to help in the investigation.
