Man sustains head and arm injuries in tree-felling mishap

KOTA KINABALU: A man sustained head and arm injuries after a tree he was chopping fell on him at a farm in Penampang.

The 46-year-old was cutting trees on his farm in Kg Togudon when the accident occurred, according to state Fire and Rescue Department officials yesterday.

Luckily, officials said, the tree was not of significant size.

Penampang Fire Station chief Zeno Tingalan said they received a call at around 12.08pm and arrived at the scene some 35km away from the station about half an hour later.

The firemen had to navigate through challenging terrain, including small hills and a river, to reach the injured man.

“Upon reaching the scene, the victim was given early medical attention.

“He was later carried out on a stretcher and taken to hospital for treatment,” he said in a statement.

Zeno said the victim was reported to be in stable condition.

Firemen wrapped up their operations at around 4.15pm.

Meanwhile, in Kota Baru, Kelantan, authorities said the fire at a recycling collection site on Jalan Padang Tembak in Pengkalan Chepa Industrial Area has been contained.

Head of Zone 1 of the Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department Senior Fire Supt Khairul Ariffin Che Ramli said the extinguishing operation, which entered its fifth day, involved a fire engine equipped with two water jets and two excavators provided by the company.

Deputy director of the Kelantan Environment Department Mohamad Zamzani Ibrahim said they would wait for a report from the fire department on the fire incident for further action, Bernama reported.

He said any action will only be taken based on the report received, including whether it was done intentionally.

On Oct 27, the site for collection of recyclables caught fire with 80% of it razed by 6pm and 40 firemen were deployed to douse the fire with five engines and four water tankers.
