Two addicts arrested in Penampang drug bust


KOTA KINABALU: A man and a woman in their twenties were arrested after police seized over half a kilogramme of substance believed to be syabu from them.

The duo was detained on Thursday, when officers from the Penampang district’s Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department found 10 transparent plastic packets containing 501.29g of crystal-like substances, suspected to be methamphetamine, also known as syabu on the streets.

Penampang district police chief Supt Sammy Newton said both suspects tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine. The pair are now in remand while investigations continue.

If the drugs are syabu, the police estimated their value to be RM16,000.

Supt Newtown said the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment with a minimum of 15 lashes if not sentenced to death.

“They are also under investigation for drug misuse under Section 15(1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” he added.
