KUALA LUMPUR: The Higher Education Ministry is still gathering information over claims that a Malaysian student is serving as a mercenary in Ukraine, says Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir (pic).
The minister said he is waiting for a full report on the matter.
“We will look into it first. It’s too early for me to comment, as I need to verify the facts first.
“I will obtain the necessary information. I will comment later because I have not received complete details,” he told the media when met after Friday prayers at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia.
Several photos of Malaysian identity cards and driving licences, said to have been found on the battlefield in the Ukraine-Russia war, have emerged.
These documents were reportedly discovered following the successful capture of a Ukrainian military fortress in Levadne, Zaporizhia, by Russian forces.
The man in question is said to be associated with the 16th Rifle Battalion of Ukraine, where he is reportedly engaged in combat against the Russian army.
Among the documents discovered is one showing a registered address in Padang Besar, Perlis.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said earlier that police were investigating the authenticity of the information regarding the alleged discovery of Malaysian identity cards and driving licences.
Razarudin added that police were verifying the allegations by obtaining detailed information from the Foreign Ministry.
As of Oct 29, the Foreign Ministry said it could not confirm the validity of the information at this time and advised Malaysians to take precautionary measures to ensure their personal safety while abroad.
