BUTTERWORTH: Leakages and wastage in government subsidies must be effectively addressed through accurate data and information provided by the Statistics Department (DOSM), says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic).
The Prime Minister was concerned that government spending would continue to increase but subsidies might not reach the intended target groups due to unresolved issues of “leaky subsidies”.
He said studies indicated that Malaysia, while known for having one of the lowest tax collections and tax bases, provides among the highest subsidies and aid in Asia.
“While it is positive that our subsidies are extensive, without reliable data, we are witnessing significant leakages, which must be addressed urgently.
“This is a critical and strategic role that the Statistics Department must play,” he said at DOSM’s 75th diamond jubilee celebration yesterday.
The Prime Minister said the department played a critical and strategic role in enhancing data collection and implementing new measures.
He added that figures and data compiled, including through the central database hub (Padu), would assist the government in addressing leakages and overlaps in the distribution of aid and subsidies to the public.
Anwar also stressed on the importance and integrity of data produced by the Statistics Department, particularly in aiding the government with planning, economic projections, investments, poverty alleviation and effective delivery of aid.
“Findings of the Agricultural Census 2024 will be instrumental in formulating agricultural policies that will ensure food security and production, and to accurately address challenges faced by farmers and fishermen,” he said. The Prime Minister said work by the department’s staff should be highlighted and be given priority, particularly in the fields of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI).
“For too long, certain ministries and departments have relied on external experts. While this may be necessary at times, it can impede progress and hinder the development of internal capacities,” he said.
The country, Anwar added, must no longer drive growth or implement changes by solely relying on external experts.
“It is essential to learn from DOSM’s experience and expertise. They can provide data and figures at all levels, from district and state to national,” he said.
