Man delivering fish dies after truck plunges into Tawau river

KOTA KINABALU: A passenger on his way to deliver fish to market died after his four-wheel drive crashed through a bridge railing into a river in Tawau district.

The driver of the truck who sustained minor injuries has been arrested for causing death due to reckless driving under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Tawau district police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said the 31-year-old passenger of the vehicle died at the hospital after being found at the accident site at Batu 2, Jalan Apas at about 5.25am Sunday (Nov 3).

ACP Jasmin said initial investigations showed that they were coming into Tawau district from the northern Kudat district to supply fish at the market.

"We believe the driver was speeding and lost control of his vehicle before skidding and crashing through the iron railings of the bridge and plunging into the river," he said, adding that the public assisted the victim to safety while firemen helped pull out the second victim

The two victims were sent to Tawau Hospital by ambulance but the passenger died during treatment, he confirmed.
