Meritocratic entry into five varsities

SIBU: Admission into five state-owned universities in Sarawak will be based solely on meritocracy, says Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.

The five universities are Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Curtin University Malaysia, University of Technology Sarawak, i-CATS University College and Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak or Centexs.

The state Deputy Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister said student enrolment into these universities will no longer go through a quota-based system.

“In other words, it’s based on meritocracy,” he said at the Sarawak Career and Training Fair 2024 here yesterday.

With meritocracy, students will have to work harder and compete to secure their place, he noted.

Dr Annuar said for Sarawak to advance towards becoming a developed state, meritocracy is the “only way to train talents and pick the best of the best among our students”.
