Being a tightwad can take the shine off romance

A MALAYSIAN woman made an anonymous post on social media platform Dcard to complain about her boyfriend for taking her to an economy rice shop to celebrate her birthday, China Press reported.

“I know saving money is a virtue, but he is simply taking it too far,” she wrote.

She said she initially had fallen in love with him because of his aptitude for financial planning, but several years into their relationship, his frugality has become a source of frustration for her.

The woman maintained that she was not expecting him to wine and dine her at fancy restaurants and she would have been fine going to a cafe or a Japanese restaurant.

When she asked her boyfriend about it, he merely said: “There are many choices at an economy rice shop. We are less likely to argue (if we wanted to have different dishes).”

Many users advised her to be frank with her boyfriend on how she wanted to celebrate her birthday, while others were critical of the guy for not even getting a gift for her.

“He must be more in love with economy rice than his girlfriend!” one quipped.
