Man killed in freak accident during long distance fish delivery

Breached bridge: Passers-by gathering at the accident site in Jalan Apas, Tawau.

KOTA KINABALU: A man was killed and another suffered minor injuries when their four-wheel drive vehicle, laden with fish, crashed through a bridge railing and plunged into a river in Tawau.

Tawau district police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said the 31-year-old passenger died at hospital while the 32-year-old driver suffered minor injuries in the accident at Baru 2, Jalan Apas at 5.25am yesterday.

He said initial investigation showed that they were on their way to Tawau from the northern Kudat district to supply fish at the market.

“We believe the driver was speeding and lost control of his vehicle before it skidded and crashed through the iron railings of the bridge, then plunged into the river,” he said.

“The public assisted one of the victims to safety while firemen helped pull out the second victim.”

The two victims were sent to Tawau Hospital by ambulance, but the passenger succumbed to his injuries during treatment, added ACP Jasmin.

Police have arrested the driver for causing death due to reckless driving under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
