KOTA BARU: The Kelantan Wildlife Protection and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) has captured a sun bear and a black panther on Monday (Nov 4).
State Perhilitan director Mohamad Hafid Rohani the sun bear was captured in Kampung Sungai Pas, Kuala Krai, while the black panther was caught at a plantation in Kuala Koh, Gua Musang.
"These two wild animals were captured following a complaint from villagers about a sun bear wandering into their farms and a panther allegedly harming cattle in the plantation area.
"The sun bear and black panther entered the traps set up at their respective locations. This brings some relief to the residents in the area and helps prevent further losses resulting from crop destruction and property damage due to the conflict,” he said in a statement today.
Mohamad Hafid said the wild animals would be relocated to a more suitable and safe habitat soon.
He advised residents to take measures such as never going to the orchard alone and at night to reduce unwanted encounters with sun bears and black panthers.
Mohamad Hafid said the capture and relocation of the animals were not a long-term solution, as the orchards were situated near a permanent forest reserve, which served as the original habitat for the wildlife.
"The public is advised to exercise caution if they come across wild animals and not take any actions that could put their safety at risk.
"Any complaints and information regarding wildlife could be directed to Perhilitan via 1-800-88-5151 or through e-complaints on the website www.wildlife.gov.my,” he said. - Bernama
