Scaly danger lurks in S’wak

A crocodile turns up along the Sungai Samariang riverbank in Sarawak right next to a public warning signboard cautioning of such a reptile’s presence.

Although crocodiles are protected under local wildlife laws, a recent surge in its population has led the authorities to resorting to adopt extreme measures including culling to create zones free of the reptile.

On Sept 18, Cicilia Julan Intik, a six-year-old girl was snatched by a crocodile in front of her grandfather and dragged underwater at the Tatau River in Bintulu.

Days later, the mutilated body of a 59-year-old named Minggu Ikum was found at the crocodile-infested Baram River at Miri.

On April 19, a 76-year-old Minu Khien was attacked by a crocodile while hunting for clams at Sungai Kampung Rayu in Lundu.

Last year, six people died in Sarawak after being set upon by crocodiles.
