60 deaths, over 6,000 accidents reported during Deepavali period


KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 6,013 accidents were recorded nationwide during the Deepavali long weekend.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said 60 deaths occurred from Thursday to Sunday (Oct 31 to Nov 3).

"We conducted 388 operations and detained 97 people for various offences.

"These include 91 under the Road Transport Act 1987, two under the Penal Code, and three for drug offences," he told a press conference after the department's monthly assembly on Tuesday (Nov 5).

He said 647 vehicles were also seized during the same period.

On a related matter, Comm Mohd Yusri said a total of 119 Ops Samseng Jalanan were conducted.

"We detained 51 individuals for reckless driving, 45 for using fancy number plates and two for illegal racing.

"We also seized 328 motorcycles," he added.
