Body of missing drowned teenager found near Teluk Sengat

KOTA TINGGI: The body of a 15-year-old teenager who went missing after a fishing trip with friends at Sungai Johor near Teluk Sengat has been found.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said the teenager was first reported missing on Nov 3 at 4.30pm.

“The victim went fishing with two friends, aged 21 and 23, at Sungai Johor.

“The group paused their activity and sought shelter under a nearby TNB substation due to heavy rain and strong winds,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (Nov 5).

He added that at 2.30 pm, the rope securing their fibreglass boat to the substation broke, causing the boat to drift away.

“All three jumped into the river to try and retrieve the boat. While two of them managed to reach safety, the third did not resurface,” he said.

The search and rescue operation resumed at 8am on the third day, he added.

Later, the team received a report from the public regarding a sighting of a male body floating on the surface of Sungai Layau, about 7km from where the teenager was initially reported missing.

“Family members at the scene were able to identify the body.

“The remains were then transferred to the Forensic Unit at Kota Tinggi Hospital for a post-mortem examination and further investigation,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under a Sudden Death Report (SDR).
