Don't be hypocrites, Anwar tells critics of Najib's apology

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has slammed those who criticised him for welcoming Datuk Seri Najib Razak's apology while remaining silent on other corrupt individuals.

"These critics are not vocal on the corrupt deeds of others and seem to claim that Najib is the only issue, which is total hypocrisy," the Prime Minister said.

"There are ex-leaders who have amassed billions of ringgit and these so-called anti-corruption forces are totally mute with not a single statement or concern from them" Anwar said in an interview with an online portal on Tuesday (Nov 5).

He acknowledged that Najib's apology was "limited" but defended his reception of the former prime minister's statement saying it's always good to thank and welcome anyone who says "Yes, I am sorry".

Anwar said it pained him that the 1MDB scandal involving billions of ringgit occured when Najib was the prime minister and finance minister.

Najib had, on Oct 24, apologised to Malaysians on the 1MDB fiasco and denied being the mastermind of the scandal.

Anwar welcomed the apology although the Prime Minister's gesture was slammed by several quarters.

"Some have accused me of going too far in combating graft, but the corruption was systemic and graft busters have to be tough to get to the root of the problem," he added.
