JOHOR BARU: The Johor government will meet taxi operators in the state for feedback on the Cabinet’s decision to phase out natural gas vehicles (NGVs) from July next year, says an executive councillor.

“I will listen to their (views) and see how many taxi drivers will be affected by this policy change.

“We will also discuss the incentives offered by the Federal Government.

“If it is not enough, the state government will look at other ways to assist them,” he told reporters after launching a new park-and-ride bus service between Country Garden Danga Bay and the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex here on Tuesday (Nov 5).

He had been asked to comment on Transport Minister Anthony Loke’s announcement that NGVs will no longer be allowed to be registered or used on Malaysian roads from July 1.

The Cabinet decision was made on Oct 2 following safety concerns regarding NGVs, Loke said on Monday (Nov 4).

The minister also said eligible NGV taxi owners will be given aid to make the switch in the form of a RM3,000 voucher that will be paid out within 30 days.
