IPOH: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued a total of 11,435 motorcycle summonses nationwide as of Nov 4 as part of the Ops Khas Motosikal, which was launched on Friday (Nov 1).
JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli stated that on the fourth day of the two-month nationwide special operation, 31,851 motorcycles were inspected, and action was taken against 4,533 motorcycles.
"This special operation was conducted because statistics indicate that the number of accidents and fatalities from road incidents is rising, with 70% of these cases involving motorcyclists.
"Additionally, 135 motorcycles were confiscated for failing to comply with the regulations under the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) and its related regulations," he said in a press conference on Tuesday (Nov 5).
He noted five main offences: 2,922 cases of no competent driving licence (CDL), 2,290 with expired motor vehicle licences (LKM), 2,044 without insurance coverage, 1,043 technical offences, and 663 for registration numbers not following specifications.
"JPJ will not compromise with any motorcyclist or pillion rider who fails to comply with established road regulations," he added.
Additionally, he mentioned a vehicle recall involving 3,722 units, including Perodua Alza, Aruz, and the 2024 Honda CB350RS motorcycles, due to non-compliance with safety specifications.
He clarified that no action will be taken against vehicle owners who do not take their vehicles to the service centres.
"This recall is voluntary for vehicle owners. When they bring their vehicles to the service centre, repairs and replacements will be done for free. We ask for cooperation from owners to ensure safety," he said.
While manufacturers typically handle recalls, JPJ will now issue public statements to inform owners of necessary actions.
"Previously, manufacturers managed recalls. Starting this year, JPJ will issue a statement to recall the vehicle, but the vehicle management will remain with the manufacturer.
"Reports and notifications must first be sent to JPJ regarding the recalls," he added.
