Lorry driver nabbed in Teluk Intan after unlicensed fireworks display sparks blaze


IPOH: A 24-year-old man has been detained after fireworks during a birthday party caused a fire in the open hall of Arena Square Teluk Intan on Sunday (Nov 3).

Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Ahmad Adnan Basri said the lorry driver was arrested at his home in Teluk Intan at 3pm on Monday (Nov 4).

"The fire occurred during a birthday party with about 500 guests. The organiser (set off)fireworks without a permit.

"Investigations found that the fire may have been caused when bursts from the fireworks hit the roof of the hall," he said in a statement on Monday.

ACP Ahmad Adnan said the case is being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or explosive substance, and Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.

He added that the suspect will be brought to the Teluk Intan Magistrate's Court on Tuesday (Nov 5) for a remand application.

He reminded the public that it is illegal to set off fireworks without a licence and dangerous without proper precautions.
