MetMalaysia issues thunderstorm warning for 11 states


PETALING JAYA: Thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds have been forecast for 11 states, including Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Penang.

The Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued an advisory on Tuesday (Nov 5) at 3:40pm stating that thunderstorms are expected throughout the states of Perlis, Kedah and Penang.

Selangor (Hulu Selangor, Gombak, Petaling, and Hulu Langat) and Kuala Lumpur are also expected to be affected.

Other areas expected to be affected are Perak (Kerian, Larut, Matang and Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, Kinta and Kampar), Kelantan (Pasir Mas, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai), Terengganu (Besut, Setiu and Hulu Terengganu) and Pahang (Lipis, Bentong and Pekan)

Thunderstorms are expected in the following areas as well: Sarawak - Kuching (Bau and Kuching), Serian, Sri Aman (Sri Aman), Betong (Pusa, Betong and Saratok), Sarikei (Pakan, Sarikei and Julau), Bintulu (Tatau and Sebauh), Miri (Subis, Beluru and Marudi) and Limbang - and Sabah - Interior (Sipitang, Tenom, Beaufort, Nabawan, Keningau and Tambunan), West Coast (Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Ranau), Tawau and Sandakan (Tongod, Telupid, Kinabatangan and Beluran).

The advisory is effective until 6pm.

On Nov 1, MetMalaysia director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the Northeast Monsoon season will start on Nov 5 and continue until March 2025.

During the initial phase of the Northeast Monsoon, from November to December, heavy rain is expected in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Sarawak and Sabah.

From January to February 2025, Pahang, Johor, Sarawak and Sabah are likely to experience heavy rainfall.
