Police to use drones to tackle cross-border crimes in Kelantan

KOTA BARU: Kelantan police are set to deploy high-tech drones to tackle cross-border crimes between Malaysia and Thailand in the near future.

Kelantan police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat (pic) said that they are collaborating with the Bukit Aman Air Wing Unit on this initiative.

He explained that these advanced drones could assist in addressing smuggling issues, including drugs and other controlled or illegal items being moved in and out of Kelantan.

"The use of high-tech drones can help us curb cross-border crimes from Sungai Golok to Pengkalan Kubor, covering about 100km, with 27 static posts.

"When there's smuggling, these sophisticated drones can track over 50km at sea without needing to approach the suspects closely," he told reporters at the Kelantan police headquarters on Tuesday (Nov 5).

He added that the drones would also be utilised during the Northeast Monsoon season, and they have already established collaborations with neighbouring countries Thailand and Laos.

Meanwhile, to further combat cross-border crimes, he suggested to Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nasuruddin Daud that a wall should be built along the banks of Sungai Golok.

"This wall will serve a dual purpose - preventing cross-border crime-related cases and mitigating flood risks in Sungai Golok," he said. – Bernama
