SHAH ALAM: The prosecution in the case of celebrity preacher Syed Shah Iqmal Syed Mohd Shaiful, also known as Da'i Syed, is seeking a heavier sentence than the 10 years' jail and three strokes of the cane imposed on him for rape.
Syed Shah Iqmal's lawyer Muhammad Amin Othman told this to reporters after case management before High Court senior assistant registrar Nadia Othman here on Tuesday (Nov 5).

"We (the defence) are appealing against the conviction and sentence, while the prosecution is appealing against the (10 years') imprisonment," he said, adding that the court has fixed Dec 10 for further case management.
Syed Shah Iqmal, temporarily released from prison after the High Court granted a stay of execution on his 10-year jail sentence pending his appeal, arrived at the court at 9.15am.
On Aug 30, Shah Alam Sessions Court judge Norazlin Othman imposed the sentence on Syed Shah Iqmal for raping a 23-year-old woman in a room at a condominium in Section 7 here at 1.35am on Sept 11, 2019.
The judge also dismissed his bid for a stay of execution on the grounds that there were no special circumstances to warrant it.

On April 10 last year, Syed Shah Iqmal was acquitted and discharged of the rape charge by the same court on grounds that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case at the end of its case.
However, on March 7 this year, the Shah Alam High Court overturned the Sessions Court decision after allowing the prosecution's appeal and ordered the accused to enter his defence. – Bernama
