Cops nab party host over fireworks blaze

IPOH: The police have detained an organiser of a birthday party who provided various types of fireworks without a permit, which led to a fire in the open hall at Arena Square, Teluk Intan, on Sunday.

Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Ahmad Adnan Basri said that a 24-year-old lorry driver was arrested at his house in Teluk Intan on Monday at 3pm.

“At a birthday party with about 500 guests, the organiser provided various types of fireworks without a legal permit, which led to the fire.

“Investigations found the fire might have started from sparks caused by fireworks hitting the roof of the hall,” he said in a statement yesterday.

ACP Ahmad Adnan added the case is being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code and Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.

He also announced yesterday’s remand of the suspect for further police investigation at the Teluk Intan Magistrate’s Court.

He reminded the public that using fireworks without a licence is illegal and dangerous.

“People should avoid using fireworks without approval to prevent accidents like this,” he said.
