Early morning commuters stuck in traffic on Penang Bridge after accident closes two lanes island-bound

BUTTERWORTH: Thousands commuting to work on Wednesday (Nov 6) morning were caught in congestion on the Penang Bridge due to ongoing maintenance work worsened by an accident.

The accident occured at KM7.7 of the bridge, island-bound, at about 6am Wednesday.

PLUS Malaysia Bhd's @plustrafik X (formerly known as Twitter) account reported that the accident has caused slow-moving traffic and the left and right lane of the bridge heading to the island is blocked.

It also advised motorists to drive carefully.

Motorist Azimah Abdul Aziz,41, said she was on her way to work in Batu Maung at 6.15am when she found out through her Waze app that a massive traffic jam was building up ahead.

“The app showed there was an unusual amount of congestion on my route, and I thought it might be an accident or a road closure," she said

She then decided to take an alternative route through the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge.

On the maintenance work on Penang Bridge, the work is ongoing from 10am to 3pm from KM1.8 to KM2.2, island-bound.

"The left lane will be closed from 10am to 3pm.

"Please follow the directions on the signboards," said PLUS Malaysia Bhd's @plustrafik X account.
