PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) assistant commissioner has been charged at the Shah Alam court with misappropriating RM613,000 seized by the agency.
Azizun Mohamad, 44, pleaded not guilty to misappropriating the money, which was seized in an operation in 2019.
The funds in question were seized during MACC’s Ops Green, which uncovered diesel vehicle registration fraud in the mySikap system.
Azizun allegedly took the money between June 1, 2020 and February this year in Cyberjaya.
The Grade 48 officer was charged under Section 403 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail sentence of at least six months but not more than five years, upon conviction. He is also liable to be whipped and fined if found guilty.
Sessions Court judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud allowed bail of RM30,000 in one surety, and ordered Azizun to report to the MACC headquarters once a month.
He was also ordered to hand over his passport and reminded not to contact any of the witnesses involved in the case, nor to access the agency’s database in Kedah.
The court then set Dec 9 for mention. Mohd Afif Ali prosecuted while Mohd Nazri Yahya acted for the accused.
Meanwhile, the MACC in a statement said it takes the issue of integrity and work ethics among its officers seriously and will not hesitate to act against any officer who violates the rule of law.
“This action reflects MACC’s commitment to upholding justice and combating corruption and abuse of power without fear or favour,” it added.
