KOTA KINABALU: A man was killed while another was hurt after the van they were travelling in skidded and plunged into a 6m deep ravine before crashing into a tree along the Kimanis - Keningau road early Wednesday (Nov 6).

The van driver, identified as Lee Jia Jun, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene following severe head and bodily injuries.

His friend, a 23-year-old local man, survived but sustained injuries from his waist down.

Kimanis fire station chief Johainin Ruslan said they received a distress call at 6.55am, and rushed to the scene some 28km from the station.

He said they were told that two victims were involved, with both of them pinned in the wrecked vehicle.

Johainin said the injured man was taken to the Papar Hospital for emergency treatment while the deceased was handed over to police for further action.

Firemen concluded their operations on site at 9.30am, after making sure there were no more hazardous elements at the accident scene.
