Sewage treatment plants among worst offenders

JOHOR BARU: Discharges from sewage treatment plants are a significant source of pollution, affecting 25 out of 672 rivers across the country, according to Environment Department (DOE) director-general Datuk Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar.

He said the polluted rivers, which fall under water quality classes III and IV, have been identified in six states – Kedah, Penang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and Sarawak.

“In addition to sewage discharges, other sources of pollution include livestock waste, industrial effluents, and sediment runoff from development projects during rainfall,” he said at the Sekolah Lestari-Anugerah Alam Sekitar and Media programme at SK Bukit Mutiara here.

Also present at the programme were Johor Education director Mohd Hanafi Samad and Johor DOE director Dr Mohd Famey Yusoff.
