Melaka authorities crack down on illegal food processing facility

MELAKA: The Melaka Immigration Department (JIM) discovers a food processing facility operating without a license and employing illegal immigrants at Pulau Gadong.

Melaka JIM director Anirwan Fauzee Mohd Aini said 22 of the illegal immigrants were detained during a raid on Thurs (Nov 7).

"We carried out surveillance on the operation for a week before the raid was conducted by 20 of my officers," he said.

Anirwan Fauzee said all those detained during the raid were aged 20 to 35 years and were found to have overstayed in the country.

"The Malaysian manager of the store claimed that the workers were sourced from an employment agency. We issued a notice to the manager and another local who is employed as a clerk at the site to assist in the investigation.

"We also found that the facility has been operating without a licence," he said.

Anirwan Fauzee said another 11 illegal immigrants were detained during a separate operation at a restaurant and a wholesale market here.

"All 11 failed to produce work permits and identification documents during the raid," he added.
