Motorcycle of teen killed in crash shows evidence of collision with police officer’s car, court hears

IPOH: The motorcycle belonging to a 17-year-old student, who was killed after being rammed by a senior police officer’s car, exhibits evidence consistent with a car colliding with the back of a motorcycle, the High Court here heard.

The seventh witness, state Chemistry Department science officer Burhanuddin Mat Sharif, 49, said that forensic analysis showed the transfer of several materials between the motorcycle and the car at the incident scene. Burhanuddin explained that samples collected from the motorcycle were labelled as Y1, Y2, and Y3, while specimens from the car were marked as P1, P2, and P3.

He said, "On Dec 18 last year, I conducted an inspection of both vehicles at the police headquarters to analyse the transferred evidence.

"The lab analysis revealed that white paint fragments (Y1) from the motorcycle matched those on the car (P1). Black-painted plastic fragments (P2) from the car were consistent with the motorcycle’s black paint sample (Y2), and the tyre rubber sample (P3) matched the motorcycle’s black foreign material sample (Y3)," he testified in the High Court before Justice Datuk Bhupindar Singh Gurcharan Singh Preet.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Afzainizam Abdul Aziz led the prosecution team, which included Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani, V. Suloshani, and Low Qin Hui.

The defence team was led by M. Athimulan, with former Perak police chief Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid and Aiman Hakim Kamaruzzaman also representing the accused.

During the trial, Burhanuddin described the damage to both vehicles. The motorcycle had a broken rear light, damage to the left tyre, scratches around the registration plate mounting, and was missing its exhaust pipe.

He added that the car had a broken right headlight, black scratches on the bumper, and a partially detached front bumper on the right side.

He further mentioned that the forensic report included ten exhibit images, along with a relative sketch of the incident scene.

"There are five exhibit images of the motorcycle and five exhibit images of the car," he added.

Meanwhile, the sixth witness, police photographer Nik Zamri Ismail, testified that he had taken 36 photos at the scene.

"I can identify the images of the vehicles at the incident scene," he said.

Among the images were those showing the suspect chasing the victim and the route of the chase as both entered the intersection.

On Monday (Nov 4), footage from five different sources, including a CD-R, a memory card, a DVD-R, a dashcam, and another memory card, was played in court.

On Tuesday (Nov 5), DPP Afzainizam, in his opening statement, said the accused, Deputy Superintendent Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak, had chased the victim, Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie, and rammed into him at high speed without attempting to take evasive action.

DSP Mohd Nazri is accused of murdering Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie at the intersection of Jalan Taman Jati/Jalan Pekeliling Meru Indah, near SMK Jati, on Dec 15 last year between 12.05pm and 12.40pm.

DSP Mohd Nazri was first charged in the Magistrate’s Court here on Dec 18, 2023.

The trial continues on Friday (Nov 8).
