A COMMERCIAL hub for shops will be built at Bukit Chagar station’s Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex of the much-anticipated Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link connecting Johor Baru and Singapore, says the Transport Ministry.
It said applications to do business at the hub would be opened to the public at a later date.
It added that additional parking spaces for vehicles and commuter services would be provided for the station as part of its plans to further boost the station’s accessibility and usage.
“The planned multi-level park-and-ride facility at Bukit Chagar station will have an extra 1,000 motorcycle parking lots added to the previously announced 1,500 car parking bays.
“The connecting main streets to the station’s CIQ Complex and Ibrahim International Business District (IIBD) are also currently undergoing upgrade works to help facilitate easier access,” the ministry said in a parliamentary written reply on Tuesday.
Additional commuter services for the upcoming Gemas-Johor Baru electrified double-tracking rail project, which is expected to launch later this month, are also part of the ministry’s plan to support the RTS Link and alleviate traffic congestion in Johor Baru.
To this, the ministry said it would improve the existing free myBAS stage bus service with the introduction of myBAS JB 2.0, which will see more buses and routes added to its service, including routes to Bukit Chagar station.
The ministry was responding to a question from Suhaizan Kayat (PH-Pulai), who asked about its plans to prevent traffic congestion and provide economic opportunities to small traders in areas around the RTS station.
In August, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said construction of the RTS Link between Johor Baru and Singapore was expected to be completed by January 2027.
