RM6.5bil in unpaid fines

KUALA LUMPUR: Some 33% of traffic summonses, including decades-old tickets dating back to the 1990s, remain unpaid, says the Federal traffic chief.

Illegal parking (traffic obstruction) and disobeying road signage were among the major offences committed by motorists.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said since 1990, police had issued 135.9 million summonses with a total compound of RM20.3bil.

“While a majority of the summonses have been settled, some 43.5 million tickets with fines totalling RM6.5bil are still unpaid as of Nov 6 this year,” he said yesterday after visiting the Kuala Lumpur JSPT headquarters, which is hosting a campaign offering a 50% discount on traffic summonses.

As of Wednesday, 4.3 million summonses with fines amounting to RM646.1mil had been issued nationwide this year, Comm Mohd Yusri said.

“Most of them were issued for obstructing traffic and disregarding traffic signage,” he said, adding that 881,211 of the summonses were issued in Kuala Lumpur.

The five-day discount campaign will end tomorrow.

Comm Mohd Yusri said a total of 17,002 summonses were settled in the first two days of the campaign.

“We collected RM1.86mil. A total of 3,100 people came to pay their summonses,” he said, adding that cash, e-payment and the 50% coupon could be used to pay the fines at the event.

“On the first day, 1,300 people came to settle their summonses while the second day saw 1,800 people.”

Comm Mohd Yusri advised traffic offenders to settle their summonses within the slotted time to avoid being penalised further or having to pay additional fines.

“Adherence in paying summonses shows that the people are responsible road users.

“Delaying paying summonses will only burden them more in the future,” he said.

As observed yesterday, there were long queues of people waiting to settle their summonses outside the KL JSPT headquarters, with some arriving at 7am.

The 50% discount is offered for all traffic offences except for accidents, court cases, non-compoundable offences, overtaking dangerously, improper use of emergency lanes and running red lights.

Traffic violations related to heavy vehicles, exhaust modification, overtaking on double lines and Ops Selamat summonses are not included in this offer.
