US-based Malaysian comedian Ronny Chieng calls Americans to ‘go back to Malaysia’

PETALING JAYA: US-based Malaysian comedian Ronny Chieng has asked Americans frustrated with the results of the recent US presidential polls to "go back to Malaysia".

Waving his Malaysian passport, Chieng has joked during a segment on the popular The Daily Show that if Americans are too frustrated with the results of the election, they might want to "go back to Malaysia.”

He said this in response to his co-host Desi Lydic, who has asked him to say something to inspire their spirits following the re-election of Donald Trump as the 47th US president.

“If you are feeling upset or hurt or depressed about the turn of fascism that your beloved homeland is taking, then all you have to do is this.

“Just look into your heart and you take out your foreign passport, and you go back to Malaysia where you came from until Trump leaves office," he said.

When Lydic protested how that could be inspiring when not all of them have Malaysian passports, Chieng said:

“Oh, I don't know, it's inspiring to me.”

Chieng's repartee on the show has earned him plaudits from Malaysians on social media, with many chiming that it was the "best reply" as well as their pride in being Malaysians.

This is not the first time that Chieng, who is originally from Johor Baru, has proudly displayed his Malaysian passport.

A regular on The Daily Show, he has acted in Hollywood films such as the Crazy Rich Asians, Godzilla vs Kong as well as the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
