IPOH: An animal activist in Manjung claims that stray dogs deep in the jungles of Segari are being shot.

Khairil Azhar Khairuddin, 48, said that local residents and activists have heard gunshots coming from the jungle followed by cries of distressed animals.

The former Manjung District Councillor claimed that residents near the forest are afraid to take videos of what is supposedly local authorities bringing the dogs into the jungle.

“They take them so deep into the jungle that we are unable to find the carcasses.

“This is no way to treat the strays,” Khairil said when contacted on Saturday (Nov 9).

Astaka assemblyman Jason Ng, when contacted, condemned the act of shooting strays and labelled it as inhumane.

“I am not sure who is involved, but it does not matter which party is involved; this act is unacceptable.

“I will be checking with the council on the matter. Local authorities must follow proper procedures in handling stray dogs,” he said.

When contacted, state housing and local government committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching said she had forwarded the complaint to the Manjung District Council and was awaiting a report from them.
