Sabah firm on rejecting claims over sovereignty

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has reiterated its stand to not recognise any claim over the state as it is a sovereign body under the Malaysian Federation.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said this in hailing the French Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss the challenge filed by those who claimed to be the heirs of the defunct Sulu sultanate of Sabah.

“We reiterate that we do not recognise any claim over Sabah as we are a sovereign state of the Malaysia Federation,” he said.

In a statement, Hajiji also thanked the Federal Government for its efforts in resolving the matter.

On Wednesday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said posted on Facebook that the French court had fully dismissed the suit filed by the alleged heirs, describing it as a historic win for Malaysia.

Previously, eight citizens of the Philippines, who were supposedly heirs of the defunct Sulu sultanate, had filed for arbitration proceedings in Spain with the aim of seeking billions of dollars from Malaysia in their claim on Sabah.
