Manjung Municipal Council refutes claims of animal cruelty against stray dogs

IPOH: The Manjung Municipal Council (MPM) denies accusations of cruelty against stray dogs and has lodged a police report regarding a viral video used to make the claim.

In a statement issued by its Strategic Communications and Public Relations department, the council said the accusations and allegations of cruelty in the disposal of street dogs in the Manjung district are untrue.

“MPM is deeply concerned about the welfare of animals and ensures that all actions taken in managing street animals comply with the law and established ethics,” it said in a statement on Sunday (Nov 10)

It said that while the council does dispose of the carcasses of dogs that were killed in an accident or found dead by the public, by burying them at the animal transit centres. The MPM does not shoot dogs at the centres.

“MPM also denied any connection to the shooting of street dogs in Segari Forest. Instead, MPM only released the dogs at the Teluk Mengkudu Garbage Landfill in Segari,” it said in the statement.

“MPM always strives to find the best solution in safeguarding the interests of society and animal welfare, but it is recognised that this issue is complicated which requires more parties to come forward to cooperate and play a role, so it is recommended that NGOs, animal lovers and all interested parties can continue to work with MPM in dealing with this issue,” it said.

On Saturday (Nov 9), it was reported that an animal activist in Manjung claimed stray dogs deep in the jungles of Segariwere being shot.

It was said that residents and activists in the area had heard gunshots coming from the jungle, followed by cries of distressed animals.
