Sibu woman faces three charges under Child Act 2001 for abusing young teen son


SIBU: A woman has been charged with three counts for offences against her 14-year-old son under the Child Act 2001 here on Monday (Nov 11).

No plea was recorded from the accused, Bibi Narcessus Dryddeen Jitai, 45, while subordinate Sessions Court Registrar Rommie Ahmad Zaidi ordered the cases to be brought for further mention on November 18.

No bail was offered to the accused who was unrepresented.

The accused is facing the charges under Section 31(1)(a) of the Act which makes it an offence for anyone responsible for the care of a child to "abandon, neglect or expose the said child to danger so as to cause him/her physical or emotional injury."

If convicted, she can be fined up to RM50,000 or jailed for up to 20 years or both.

In the first charge, the accused had at about 6pm on August 15, neglected her child by chasing him out of a house in Jalan Pahlawan.

The second charge stated that the accused had at 1.30pm on the same day, hit the boy with a broomstick.

In the third charge, the accused had at about 5pm on October 20, scalded the boy with hot water.
