Daim's role in steering Asian financial crisis must be remembered, says Muhyiddin

PETALING JAYA: Tun Daim Zainuddin’s contribution in steering Malaysia out of the Asian financial crisis must be remembered, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

In a statement after Daim’s passing on Wednesday (Nov 13), the Perikatan Nasional chairman said that the second tenure of Daim as the Finance Minister in 1999 saw rapid development of the economy.

“I am saddened by the demise of former finance minister Daim. His major contributions as the finance minister twice - from 1984 to 1991 and then in 1999 to 2001 - saw the rapid development of the country’s economy.

“His service to the country in managing the economy and steering the country safely out of the Asian financial crisis then should be remembered in the history annals of Malaysia,” said Muhyiddin, who expressed his condolences to Daim’s family.

Muhyiddin was in the Cabinet as Youth and Sports Minister when Daim was appointed as Finance Minister for the second time in 1999. They were both in Umno then.

Daim passed away at the age of 86 this morning.
