Dewan Rakyat observes moment of silence for Daim


KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat observed a moment of silence over the passing of Tun Daim Zainuddin.

Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul paid tribute to the former finance minister and lawmaker.

“With sadness, I would like to announce that Tun Daim Zainuddin, former MP of Kuala Muda and Merbok and former member of the federal government passed away on Nov 13, 2024,” Johari said before beginning the afternoon proceedings.

Johari said Daim also served as senator from 1980 to 1982 and later as MP for Kuala Muda and Merbok from 1982 to 2003.

Johari relayed his condolences to Daim’s family on behalf of the Malaysian Parliament.

“I hope his family will continue to be strong while facing this situation,” he said.

He then asked Muslim lawmakers to recite the Muslim prayers for the departed and non-Muslims to observe a moment of silence.

Daim passed away on Wednesday (Nov 13) morning aged 86.

His lawyer Datuk Dr Gurdial Singh Nijar confirmed that he passed away on Wednesday (Nov 13) after being admitted to Assunta Hospital for stroke last month.
