IPOH: A programme on the doughnut economy will be introduced for primary school pupils here, says Datuk Rumaizi Baharin.
The mayor said the Ipoh City Council wants to create awareness of sustainable economic models among children, and the programme would be gradually introduced to all primary schools in the city before the end of the year.
"The children are going to inherit the planet and that is why we (will) start with them (primary schoolchildren) to (educate) them on what the model is about.
"We want to create awareness so the children can take care of the planet," he said after officiating the city-level World Global Doughnut Economics Day at SK Marian Convent on Wednesday (Nov 13).
"It has to start from young at the primary school level.
"We will also have roadshows for the public later, and I hope that we can make the Ipoh Doughnut Economic City (initiative) a success by 2027," he added.
In September, Ipoh was named a recipient of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Scroll of Honour Award for the initiative.
Rumaizi received the award in a ceremony held in conjunction with the World Habitat Day celebration in Mexico on Oct 7.
The doughnut economy model seeks to balance humanity’s needs with the planet’s ecological boundaries, with a balance between societal well-being and environmental sustainability.
