Mitra approves almost RM100mil for Indian community empowerment, says Ramanan

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) has approved 14 initiatives worth RM99.985mil this year, the Dewan Rakyat was told Wednesday (Nov 13).

Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said these initiatives covered economic, career, education, welfare and social development.

"Among the initiatives implemented or currently underway are the Malaysian Indian Skills Initiative (MISI) valued at RM10mil; an early education subsidy programme for private kindergartens valued at RM9.38mil; Mitra’s early aid programme for higher learning institution admission worth RM25mil; and the Mitra dialysis subsidy programme valued at RM7.9mil,” he said.

Ramanan, in winding up the debate on the Supply Bill 2025 at the committee level in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday said Mitra is one of the government’s main pillars in empowering the Indian community.

He said this involved enhancing access to more technical and vocational training for the community that can lead to more job opportunities.

"Mitra will also focus on entrepreneurship development programmes and provide support to increase the Indian community's involvement in business and trade. In addition, support for the gig economy among Indian youths will also be given special attention,” he added.

"To improve the quality of life for the Indian community, the social welfare system must be enhanced. Mitra will play the main role in devising programmes that can reduce the poverty rate within the Indian community.” - Bernama
